Galaxy Surfactants buys up Tri-K Industries

India-based Galaxy Surfactants has acquired New Jersey-based Tri-K Industries, expanding its footing in the specialty chemicals industry worldwide.

Galaxy said that it had bought a majority and controlling stake in Tri-k, while Dr. Gerd Dahms & Associates continue to hold a minority stake in the business.

Tri-K Industries specializes in nano-based titanium doxide ingredients, an increasingly important part of high technology sunscreen formulations.

Specialty active ingredients

On top of the titanium dioxide ingredients, Tri-K also produces a range of other specialty active ingredients used in personal care ingredients. The company is headquartered in Northvale, New Jersey and also has manufacturing facilities in New Hampshire.

In 2007 Tri-K underwent an integration with Finnish specialty chemicals company Kemira, which saw the company change its name from Tri-K to Kemira Specialty.

However, the company reverted back to the Tri-K name at the end of last year, although it continues to co-operate with the Kemira group on the joint production of titanium dioxide ingredients.

Galaxy also makes R&D acquisition

Galaxy has simultaneously acquired a majority stake in Oberhausen Technology Center, Germany - a research and development facility devoted to the development of high technology personal care products.

Although based in Mumbai, India, Galaxy has developed as a supplier of specialty ingredients to the US and European personal care industries, so the recent acquisitions will serve to increase the company’s footprint in those key markets, and globally.

“The combination of Tri-K’s specialty actives portfolio, Galaxy’s line of performance products and Oberhausen Technology Center’s expertise will be a potent combination to address our customer’s aspirations for skin, oral and hair care,” said Geera Ramakrishnan, director of home and personal care for Galaxy Surfactants.
