The UK-headquartered company has now successfully achieved certification of seven of its manufacturing sites to handle Certified Sustainable Palm Oil (CSPO) materials via Mass Balance, including facilities in Asia Pacific, Europe and the USA.
These seven sites currently handle 80% of Croda’s palm products and the company’s Vice President, Global Accounts, Chris Sayner tells CosmeticsDesign-Asia.com that the target is to have all 14 factories around the world certified by the end of next year.
“It is a big thing for Croda, and for the industry, as the topic has gathered a lot of momentum in the personal care industry this year,” he says. “It is a global issue so we have ensured we have a consistent global approach.”
Sayner explains that the latest certifications in India and Latin America further demonstrates Croda’s commitment to responsible sourcing of palm oil and palm kernel oil on a global scale.
Responsibility
Although 80% of palm oil produced is used within food production, there remains a responsibility within the personal care industry to drive the demand for sustainable palm oil, as it and its derivatives are used in 70% of personal care and cosmetics products.
As the topic has gathered a lot of momentum in the industry it has seen many of the major personal care players announce their stance on sustainable palm oil and set out their own targets.
“There has been even greater momentum with the big companies this year and we are seeing an increased uptake of sustainable palm based ingredients,” adds Sayner.
“This has a clear impact as the larger companies use larger volumes of palm based ingredient in their products; so this encourages the supply chain to develop and become more sustainable.”
Choice
By choosing to include sustainable palm ingredients in their formulation, consumer goods manufacturers demonstrate their proactive commitment to making sustainable palm oil the norm.
Croda currently has an increasing portfolio of certified sustainable palm oil derivative products for specific use in personal care from its heritage Cithrol, Span and Tween ranges, amongst others.
The ingredients supplier has a schedule in place for RSPO audits of its remaining manufacturing sites and anticipates it will be able to offer certified sustainable palm oil derivative products from all manufacturing sites globally by the end of 2015.
