Textures, ingredients and experiences in South Korea
South Korea has long been recognised as the beauty hub of Asia-Pacific as it continues to present new creations in the region.

In-cosmetics Global, held on 4th-6th April 2017, welcomed leading industry experts and companies from the world of personal care ingredients and saw a selection of innovative items born from South Korea.

As consumers demand optimised experiences, unique textures and active ingredients, Mintel explores the latest product developments to enter the beauty and personal care market.

Feeling good

The multifunctional trend is an increasingly popular preference within APAC that shows no signs of slowing down as brands seek to produce products have high-quality efficacy in a number of proven areas.

Label Young Shocking Ban Ban Cushion SPF 50+ PA+++ acts as a half foundation and half sebum-controlling moisturiser, as its cushion provides all-over coverage while providing skin care properties.

Natural active ingredients also feature heavily in the hybridisation trend, with TonyMoly 2X First Essence providing a moisturisation effect to the skin after other products have been applied. The formulation contains plant oils and fermented vitamin tree extract. It also contains vitamins B1, B2, B6, B12, C and E that provide anti-ageing and brightening benefits.

Luxury care also rates highly. Wakemake Tint Bomb Powder, for example, becomes watery once applied to consumers’ lips. It transforms lip care by helping to produce a long-lasting stain that removes feelings of dryness.

Environmentally-focused formulations

Producers are now combining internal natural formulation considerations with external environmental packaging to create an overall marketing message that is strong and pro-sustainability.

Innisfree Black Green Tea Serum has launched an anti-ageing serum that contains anti-oxidant Jeju Black Green Tea that follows two 100-day fermentation and ageing processes. The serum, packaged using printed soy ink, strives to nourish and moisturise dry skin.

A natural antioxidant is also used in CNP Laboratory Green Propolis Anti-oxydant Ampule to maximise the skin’s overall health and appearance.

Stress and pollution are considerable concerns in APAC, and so products such as Guérisson Men's One made with horse oil, intends to invigorate tired skin to encourage firmness and energy. It also provides a light fragrant scent and aims to soothe irritation by acting as a toner.

Experiential beauty

As spa beauty becomes a strong driver in the global cosmetics industry, brands are now trying to implement this element of relaxation and experience into their developments.

Using a three-step process, Mediheal S: The 3 Step Mask N.M.F removes dead skin cells and impurities, hydrates and firms the skin using an anti-wrinkle formula and adds whitening and anti-ageing capabilities, in one single pouch.

For those on the go, Make P:rem Wonderful Me In-Shower Face Pack provides a valuable solution that balances experiential beauty with time limitations. It enables consumers to complete their shower routine while leaving the adherent in-shower face mask on.

In the hair care sector, the frequent use of colouring, perming and styling can cause hair damage. Etude House Silk Scarf Damage Protein Steam Hair Pack delivers active ingredients, with proteins and amino acids to build nourishment and hydration, and improve the overall look of the hair.
