We caught up with Michael Nolte, Creative Director, Beautystreams, to find out more.
What are the key trends for spring/summer 2019? What is impacting these?
We see several trends emerging for spring/summer 2019. There is a big global colour movement towards Muddy Orange tones. This is a direct evolution of the strong beige lip trend and the orange tones you can currently spot on the market.
In 2019, oranges will become more subtle and wearable, creating enhanced, natural looks. As far as texture is concerned, the biggest trend will involve glitter with larger flakes. We already see many indie brands launching glitter formulations for face, lips, and eyes, pushing the aesthetic into the mainstream, where we expect it to arrive by 2019.
In terms of formats, we see a rising interest in transversal, easy-to-use cosmetics, e.g. an all-in-one formula that is suitable for eyes, lips, and face alike.
How will these differ in Autumn/Winter 2019/20?
While warmer tones like orange or yellow will be popular in summer 2019, the following winter will mark a shift towards what we call "Edgy Neutral" colours. Expect to see these gray-cast browns, beiges and pinks used as statement colours thanks to their high pay-off results. Cue pinkish-gray lips with khaki-gray eyeshadow, to give one example.
What should brands do to prepare for the upcoming 2019/2020 seasons?
We are currently in an interesting era where smaller brands threaten big corporations. The success of indie brands worldwide shows that consumers are looking for innovation and authenticity.
In the upcoming years, the biggest challenge for big corporations will be to establish strong brand identities, rather than jumping on the latest trend. Smaller companies are more agile and reactive, which currently makes big corporations look like mere followers.
For indie brands, the challenge will be to diversify their portfolio without falling into the trap of becoming too generic and banal.
