Dr. Umar launches advanced hair transplant technology
“For the first time in history, it is now possible to extract hair from the scalp, hair from elsewhere on the body, and the tightly-curled follicles of patients of African and indigenous descent with one single, all-in-one suite of FUE hair transplant tools,” Dr. Sanusi Umar, Founder of Dr. U Devices, commented.
Hair transplant technology
Following a series of production delays, the Dr.UGraft System, a new hair transplant technology, accesses Follicular Unit Excision (FUE).
Sharing his insights on what inspired this advanced hair technology, Dr. Umar continued: "Frustrated by the lack of options available for patients of colour in the realm of cosmetic hair transplantation, Dr. Sanusi Umar, inventor of the Dr.UGraft system, decided to personally develop a means of excising textured hair with a mechanically-driven punch.”
The UGraft system has been designed and optimised to extract follicles of all ethnic hair types, including Asian hair, which has “proven challenging in the past for conventional FUE tools and methodology”, Dr. Umar added.
These traditional FUE punches are round-tipped and have a uniform diameter throughout their length. FUE punches of this design tend to transect hair that does not grow in a straight path. Therefore, Dr. U confirms that conventional FUE systems are unable to effectively excise curly, Afro-textured hair, as well as hair that grows in areas of the body other than the nape and scalp.
Its Dr.UPunch features an intelligently-flared mouth and a graduated, expanded inner chamber. These two innovations also consist of a textured tip that work together to grip, score, and gently pull the specimen and follicle sheath into the body of the punch.
How Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) works
This form of hair transplant technology works by extracting donor hair individually. Often considered a highly specialised procedure, these individual hairs are then grafted onto bald areas.
Previously, providers have been able to access and use extraction tools, otherwise known as punches. However, after focusing on ensuring its user-friendliness and quality, Dr. U has now created a hair transplant system, which includes the Dr.UGraft Nurture hand piece and Revolution Console.
Speaking on the device’s design, Dr. Umar expressed how the Dr.UGraft System departs from this convention as its “beauty lies in its simplicity”. During live surgery, users can access optimised settings that guide the provider to select the “most appropriate setting/mode specific to the skin type of the patient on the table”.
Prevention versus restoration
In a 2017 male hair care industry report, Lucy Cornford, Category Director of Beauty and Personal Care Mintel comments on encouraging a preventative view when it comes to hair loss and damage through a “caring haircare routine earlier in life”. Natural, organic-certified, food-based and antioxidant-containing ingredients are also featuring in hair care products as brands strive to create protective and anti-pollution products.
While the preventative and protective male hair care segment is growing, brands such as Dr.U are also focusing on restoration.
Appealing to all hair types
Certified by the American Board of Dermatology, Dr. U is restoring the hair and skin of patients from all around the world. Tapping into “a passion for progress and innovation, Dr. U Devices strives to challenge the limitations of cosmetic medical technology”. This new technology strives to “deliver consistent, universal results for all skin and hair types with no exceptions”.
