Australia’s supplement company Henry Blooms Health Products is expanding its oral probiotic range with the launch of a whitening toothpaste, an ultra-sensitive mouthwash and three kids’ toothpaste.

The new products will be launched in September this year, exactly one year after the firm released its first probiotic toothpaste and mouthwash.

While the firm’s main business is in dietary supplements, in an emailed statement to CosmeticsDesign-Asia, marketing manager Emily Macgregor said the firm saw a gap in the current oral care market.

We are always looking to innovate, and where we see gaps in the current market, we’re eager to provide healthcare solutions to meet those needs.”

The firm chose to work with probiotics as it has a partnership with Probiotics Australia, a manufacturer of Australian-grown probiotic strains.

Probiotics for oral health

Its oral care products are formulated using Dental-Lac, Lactobacillus paracasei GMNL-33 with oral health functions. The toothpaste contains 10 billion CFUs per 100g tube.

Macgregor said: “It helps reduce tooth decay by balancing the delicate pH of the mouth, combating unhealthy bacteria and reducing plaque and acidity resulting in clean teeth and gums. Studies also show improved gum health and reduction in halitosis or bad breath.”

Macgregor said the advantage of Dental-Lac was its ability to work in any pH environment, unlike normal probiotic strains which can be killed at lower pH levels.

She explained that Dental-Lac was a postbiotic which meant it was deactivated but retained the therapeutic properties of a probiotic, while remaining resilient and active in moist environments.

In addition to probiotics, the firm’s toothpaste and mouthwash products also contain the prebiotics xylitol and xanthan gum. Prebiotics are healthy fibres that promote an optimal environment for probiotics to flourish.

The firm is hoping to target consumers looking for a more natural alternative to traditional oral care products. Its products are free from fluoride, parabens, titanium dioxide, added sugars and other additives.

Apart from toothpaste and mouthwash, the firm also launched an oral probiotic chewable mint product in 2018. “They have proved a popular healthy option to freshen breath whilst getting a generous dose of gut loving probiotics without sugar or artificial colours or flavours,” Macgregor said.

Henry Blooms oral health range is available in major pharmacy chains in Australia as well as New Zealand.

Future directions

Recently, the firm signed distribution agreements to export its probiotic chewables, toothpaste and mouthwash into South Korea and Vietnam.

Macgregor hopes to add Singapore to the list within the next 12 months.

Sustainability-wise, the firm is working on its eco-friendly packaging to do its part in reducing waste. According to Macgregor, all its cartons, bottles and tubs are recyclable.

By recognising the plastic pollution across the globe, we want to be part of the solution by switching to environmentally friendly packaging options and we are looking to repackage where possible using post-consumer recycled materials.”
