Japanese beauty brand SHISEIDO will launch a brand-new foundation in September that claims to bolster and fortify the skin's natural barrier with fermented kefir extract.

SHISEIDO described its upcoming Revitalessense Skin Glow Foundation as a formulation that “fuses serum and foundation”.

The cornerstone of this hybrid formulation is the combination of niacinamide and fermented kefir extract which the company claims to support the moisture barrier function of the skin.

The latter is a moisturising ingredient containing kefir extract and glycerin. It is also featured in SHISEIDO’s Eudermine Essence Lotion, a new iteration of Shiseido’s 1897 debut cosmetic product, which was launched early this year.

According to SHISEIDO, the makeup ingredients are microencapsulated and contained in the essence.

“Each time you use it, it supports the skin's moisture barrier function, leading to plump, bouncy firmness and lustrous skin full of vitality.”

The makeup component of the product helps to improve skin colour and texture, reduce the visible appearance of pores and fine wrinkles, leaving a glossy finish. The firm said that on the skin, the foundation “feels like you are wearing skin care”.

“The skin care essence reaches the skin first, so it feels like you are wearing skin care. After that, the make-up essence capsule bursts to create an even and glossy make-up film.”

The product will be launched globally on September 1. In Japan, it would be available at around 380 touchpoints, mainly in department stores, and retail at JPY6,400 (USD45.60).

Hybrid hype

Makeup-skin care hybrids have gained immense popularity among consumers. Incorporating skin care ingredients and technologies into makeup formulations, these hybrids offer a holistic approach to beauty.

In today's fast-paced world, the convenience of a multitasking product appeals to many individuals. These hybrids also align with the rising trend of minimalist beauty, which appeals to conscious consumers that are seeking formulations that priorities gentle, skin-loving ingredients.

The Shiseido Company has previously identified potential for these hybrid products, launching foundations with skin care benefits under brands such as Haku, d program, and most recently NARS Cosmetics.

The upcoming launch of SHISEIDO’s Revitalessense Skin Glow Foundation follows the introduction of NARS Light Reflecting Foundation in 2022, which turn into a global hit for the Japanese company.

According to the firm, the product is an “advanced makeup-skin care hybrid” that is made up of 70% skin care ingredients.

It is formulated with a blend of light-reflecting properties and skin care ingredients that visibly improves skin’s clarity after six weeks of daily use, according to a six-week clinical study with 31 women.
