The complexities that come with creating a more inclusive beauty market in the US means that industry leaders need to go beyond just throwing a few diverse models in ads. In recent years, we've seen more suppliers and brands put their R&D, branding and money behind filling in gaps for those left behind.
In this free webinar, CosmeticsDesign will explore the topic from multiple perspectives by turning to a panel of experts to examine how far the industry has come, as well as steps we can take to achieve true inclusivity in beauty.
The science
Jennifer Davis Alexander, PhD, Founder and CEO, drjenknowsskin.com, told CosmeticsDesign that viewers will gain insights on how genetics, environment and lifestyle impact skin health and how skin responds to the products we use.
“According to research by McKinsey Institute for Black Economic Mobility, Black Americans spent $6.6 billion on beauty products in 2021, yet research on Black skin is limited. As inclusivity continues to be a focal point of the beauty industry, it is imperative to expand our knowledge on Black skin. I want viewers to understand the importance of clinical and product testing on Black skin and how it can enhance product design choices and ultimately end-user satisfaction.”
The business
Tammie Sykes, co-owner and Global Marketing Officer, Dion Michaels Skin Care for Men, said she wants to dispel the myth that men who use beauty products are "feminine.”
“This view is not only incorrect, but it is also demeaning towards men who are born with a skin type that needs extra care,” said Sykes. “Dion Michaels embodies self-care for men at its heart. Bridging the gap between gendered skincare products and inclusivity, we are paving the way towards a market that not only has the health of our customers in mind, but also their confidence and self-image.”
The economics
Tyesha Friday, host of the Coils, Cash and Culture podcast, will present on the economic ecosystem of Black and textured hair, with a focus on how the macro environment, beauty industry themes & trends, and consumer behavior are interlinked and creating a vibrant future of economic opportunity for more inclusive beauty in hair
“I hope viewers will walk away with a more holistic understanding of the economic ecosystem of Black and textured hair; and the current and emerging possibilities to innovate to build a more inclusive beauty industry.”
