‘Testing would give absolute certainty’: Tremendous potential in neurocosmetics hindered by lack of robust testing methods

The neurocosmetics sector shows tremendous potential as the line of beauty and wellness blurs, but progress in this space is hindered by a lack of testing methods.

Justhuman was established in 2021 by CEO Roshini Sanah Jaiswal and is headquartered in the US and India. The brand rose to prominence as a pioneer in the neurocosmetics space.

Most recently, the brand introduced its first skin care product, Microshots Age Defying Peptide⁶ Treatment Cream. The anti-ageing product claims to offer an alternative that rivals treatments like Botox, microneedling and fillers.

Today, the field of neurocosmetics remains relatively underexplored, with limited understanding of its full potential and applications.

“The simplest way to just explain it is it is actually the skin-brain connection. I think most people don't understand what that actually means. The skin is the largest organ of our body, and everything that we put on our skin is having a conversation with our brain,” said Roshini Sanah Jaiswal, founder and CEO of Justhuman.

“Neurocosmatics is sort of tapping that gap which is sort of between the nervous system and the skin. It actually is a far more holistic approach to beauty. Because beauty is not just skin deep.”

Speaking on the Beauty 4.0 Podcast​, Roshini expressed the tremendous opportunities for neurocosmetics.

This segment could potentially have huge roles in areas such as medical aesthetics or the treatment of skin disorders like acne.

Roshini underscored the importance of neurocosmetics as beauty and wellness converge.

“It’s going to be massive. The wellness industry is the biggest growth industry in the world. Neurocosmetics sits on the cusp of that… In the next five years, you're going to have a lot of companies come in and provide different kinds of neurocosmetic solutions to people.”

Neurocosmetics is certainly going to evolve rapidly, and this is driving the need for better testing methods.

“This is a brand-new field… There are ingredients coming out, but today the there’s testing which has not fully come out... It's not very robust today. This is measuring psychological levels, seeing if I put a neurocosmetic cream on my face and if it also elevated my mood.

“Can I actually record that? And I can actually map that to see whether it is actually making that difference? So that kind of testing would give absolutely certainty that it is doing what it needs to do at a different level.”

While she believes this is still in a nascent stage, Roshini highlighted France and South Korea as the countries that are leading the pack in this space.

“I think in the next six to eight months we will see a lot of these sort of labs burgeoning,” she said.
