LG Household & Health Care (LG H&H)’s Vital Garden has released an edible retinol supplement to keep up with global beauty-from-within trends and boost the competitiveness of its health food business.

Since it was rebranded from Cheong Yoon Jin in 2018, Vital Garden has been developing health functional foods backed by LG H&H’s know-how and technological capabilities.

The brand’s latest product, Bifium Retinol Collagen, contains 1,000μg of retinol and 1,000mg of collagen per packet. It is also formulated with elastin and hyaluronic acid, which together make up the building blocks of skin.

Retinol is a form of fat-soluble vitamin A that has various functions, including maintenance of skin and mucous membranes, and is known to promote collagen biosynthesis.

In this product, Swiss retinol raw material and fish collagen with a low molecular weight of 500Da, which enables quick absorption, are used.

Collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid are known to be three essential elements for preserving youthful-looking skin.

“Bifium Retinol Collagen, which was launched in line with the recent increase in interest in edible retinol products, conveniently satisfies the needs of consumers who want a smooth, glowing complexion through beauty-from-within care, with only one packet needed to be taken each day.

“The citrus-lime flavoured powder formulation melts smoothly in the mouth even without water, while offering a refreshing taste. We will continue to introduce premium products that align with global health and inner beauty trends, and that provide differentiated value proposition,” Vital Garden said.

Vital Garden’s Bifium series was first released in October last year through its hero product Bifium B-3 Diet, a weight management supplement that recently recorded sales of over KRW500m (USD370,600) in a single broadcast on CJ Home Shopping channel.

LG H&H previously announced that it will be focusing on its health food business as the next-generation growth engine, with plans to expand sales channels of Vital Garden products, so as to increase customer touchpoints and advance into global markets.

Bifium B-3 Diet contains Bifidobacterium breve B-3 (B.breve B-3), the only raw material that has been recognised by Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) for its effects in body fat reduction.

As such, the probiotic strain can be applied as a functional ingredient for body fat reduction at a dosage of 5bn CFU/day.

To date, B.breve B-3 has been confirmed in seven human application tests to reduce weight and body fat, with products containing it being able to be stored at room temperature for easy transportation and consumption.

Its efficacy in body fat reduction and metabolic health was further validated in a clinical study conducted in Korea that was published in peer-reviewed journal Nutrients in December 2022.

The most notable results included a significant reduction in body weight, body fat, waist circumference, and hip circumference in the B. breve B-3 intervention group compared to the placebo group.

Other studies have also found that B. breve B-3 could improve damaged intestinal barrier function, upregulate fat metabolism, repress inflammation in the body, and help alleviate metabolic syndrome.

“As the intestinal environment has a significant impact on diet outcomes, it is receiving a lot of attention as a safe and sustainable weight loss solution. Bifium B-3 Diet was designed to help dieters improve the balance of beneficial and harmful bacteria in the intestines,” Vital Garden added.
