Kao-owned derma skin care brand SOFINA iP is adding a new product to its “UV protector” series, targeting consumers whose skin is prone to blemishes caused by sun exposure.

Eight years after its launch, SOFINA iP rebranded in 2023 to offer products based on two pillars — skin care that applies carbon dioxide propellant technology, and skin care that focuses on stratum corneum (outermost layer of the skin) cells.

Its skin care UV protector range was introduced in April last year, with the latest addition, named “03 brightening”, announced just this December.

The product is a daytime serum catering to people who are concerned about and susceptible to blemishes caused by ultraviolet (UV) exposure.

It is formulated with an active ingredient called Chamomilla ET, a botanical extract that has been approved by the Japanese government as a quasi-drug for skin whitening products.

Chamomilla ET works by inhibiting the skin’s signal transmission from endothelins (peptides) that are released when exposed to UV rays. This curbs excessive melanin production, prevents dark spots and freckles, and moisturises dull and dry skin.

The ingredient is used by Kao in a variety of products and brands, including Curél and SOFINA iP.

Additionally, 03 brightening also contains stearyl glycyrrhetinate, an anti-inflammatory and skin conditioning agent that wards off hot flashes and rough skin after sunburn. It is also said to help brighten the skin and alleviate visible redness.

“Its soft texture allows the serum to blend into the skin, leaving a non-sticky sensation. It was developed specially for those who live in an environment where blemishes are likely to form.

“After application, the colour and light properties of the pearlescent agent cover blemishes and make them less noticeable, giving the skin a natural, bright finish with a translucent look,” the brand said.

At the same time, the packaging of the two existing products from this series have been renewed to feature a logo “inspired by stratum corneum cells” and colours (a gradation of white, green and yellow) that “symbolise a return to the brand’s roots in science”.

Targeted at people with dry skin, “01 moisturizing” not only works like a protection veil against sun damage, but it also claims to contain 1.4 times the amount of water-soluble ingredients, which retain moisture and keep the skin hydrated, compared to conventional products.

On the other hand, “02 oil control” is tailored for consumers with oily skin. It defends against UV rays “without destroying the UV-blocking film”, controls excess sebum, and prevents dust, dirt and pollen from sticking to the skin even after sebum is produced.

03 brightening will be available at drug stores and major supermarkets across Japan, as well as e-commerce platforms, such as Amazon, Rakuten and @cosme, from January 25, 2025.
