Dyson has launched its second-ever hair care range formulated with a proprietary blend of seven omega-rich oils, including an ingredient grown on its farms, marking a new milestone for the company.

Developed over two years and across nine countries, the Dyson Omega range is touted to be a culmination of 13 years of agricultural expertise and 12 years of hair science research.

This line of products is powered by the Dyson Oli7 blend, a combination of seven omega-rich oils specifically selected for their hair care properties.

“Dyson’s hair care journey began in 2016 with the launch of the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer, and the company introduced its first-ever hair formulations in 2024 — the Dyson Chitosan range — following years of dedicated research and a deep commitment to understanding hair science.

“Powered by oyster mushrooms, the Chitosan range includes a Pre-style cream and a Post-style serum, designed to deliver all-day flexible hold, natural movement, and shine even in high humidity. The new Dyson Omega nourishing range marks the brand’s extension into hair care formulations, now with ingredients sourced directly from our farms,” Justina Mejia Montane, Product Development Director at Dyson Beauty, told CosmeticsDesign-Asia.

In particular, the sunflower oil used in the Oli7 blend is harvested from Dyson’s farms in Lincolnshire, England. Abundant in essential fatty acids, especially omega-6 and -9, sunflower oil helps to deeply moisturise hair, smooth cuticles, and reduce frizz.

Apart from sunflower oil, the blend comprises six other plant-based oils, namely olive oil, Abyssinian oil, corn oil, avocado oil, sesame oil, and macadamia oil.

The Omega range consists of a leave-in conditioning spray that contains the blend to nourish and restore dry, brittle and fragile hair, allowing for “effortless detangling”.

Thanks to sunflower oil’s lightweight molecular structure, it gets absorbed quickly into the hair shaft without accumulating build-up.

Additionally, the conditioning spray is formulated with antioxidants for protection against UV and heat damage, and panthenol (pro-vitamin B5) to strengthen hair. The spray mechanism is designed for even, controlled coverage on both wet and dry hair.

According to Dyson, the product has been shown to reduce breakage by up to 73% for all hair types compared to a non-conditioning shampoo. A laboratory test also found that split ends were visibly reduced by up to 96%.

Other findings include heat protection up to 230°C, and up to 90% less frizz instantly, with 48-hour control (versus untreated hair).

Another product in this series is a hair oil made from a lightweight yet rich formula that is said to instantly hydrate hair, and reduce frizz and breakage.

It is enriched with antioxidants and other active ingredients to shield against heat and mechanical damage, and to provide the cuticles with a protective seal to lock in moisture and boost shine.

When used with the Dyson Airstrait straightener, it has proven to deliver up to 261% shinier hair compared to untreated hair. In a lab test, the hair oil resulted in up to 74% less visible split ends immediately, with frizz control lasting 48 hours.

Other benefits claimed by the brand include up to 94% breakage reduction (versus non-conditioning shampoo), heat protection up to 230°C, and humidity and colour fade protection.

The hair oil can also be applied to both dry and damp hair, enabling usage convenience.

The Omega range is available in select markets, including Singapore, and will be progressively released in other countries.

All-round sensorial considerations

Dyson’s Omega collection carries a crafted fragrance composed of eight distinctive notes — fruity top notes of sparkling citrus, green tea and bergamot to create a fresh, clean scent that reflects the formulation’s lightweight finish, and floral mid notes of jasmine and rose to exude a comforting, sophisticated aroma.

Once the product dries down, deeper notes of musk, cedarwood and oak moss emerge, leaving a soft and versatile final scent, which mirrors that of the Chitosan range.

“Distinct from conventional liquid sprays, the leave-in conditioning spray starts as a thicker gel-like cream in the bottle, transforming into a lightweight mist when dispensed. To achieve this, Dyson engineers designed a bespoke bottle with a custom spray mechanism, ensuring the product distributes quickly and evenly, covering any length of hair in one easy step.”

After trialling 112 different glass bottles, the engineers opted for a weighty, sturdy design to prevent accidental spills for the hair oil.

The packaging is sculpted from glass that shows the oil’s natural colour, while the custom cap further increases stability by offering a firm grip that will not slip out of the hands, even when slick with oil.

When two worlds collide

Established in 2012, Dyson Farming is Britain’s largest farming business, with 36,000 acres of working land (about the size of 20,000 football fields).

The farms are reportedly a top-five producer of wheat grains, malting barley, oil seeds, and potatoes in the UK, as well as sunflowers for the Omega range, with the nine-hectare field being home to over 800,000 sunflowers.

To ensure the harvested seeds contain an optimal balance of beneficial compounds, the team implemented several strategies, including trialling more than 60 varieties of sunflower to identify those richest in natural ceramides, and conducting regular soil testing, micronutrient balancing, and crop walks once the seeds were planted.

“Dyson has spent over a decade experimenting and investing in precision farming, focusing on growing the best, tastiest and most nutritious produce sustainably and efficiently, while protecting the environment and encouraging biodiversity.

“It’s a passion, and in the process, I became very interested in how the farms could add to the development of ingredient-led beauty products that aid hair health. We’ve brought together two completely different worlds — farming and beauty — to develop a product that unlocks healthy hair with natural ingredients.

“Omega is the first Dyson product to feature an ingredient grown on Dyson Farms. Engineered for all hair types, it solves the problem of dry, tangled and frizzy hair using natural ingredients that we grow ourselves. Looking ahead, we continue to pioneer new ways to improve hair health through the application of innovation, technology, and ingredient science,” said Sir James Dyson, founder of Dyson and Dyson Farming.
